Nina Allen Miller, horn

Oct 24 2018

Where did you grow up? Born in Brooklyn, NY, raised in Great Neck, NY.

Where do you currently live?  Portland, Maine. Ayuh.

What instruments do you play? French horn, Wagner Tuba, recorder, and ukulele

Educational background:
Northwestern University, BS in French horn performance.

Family, Pets, Kids: Son, Joshua.  We’re owned and operated by two felines, Nicky and Ricky.

How did you get started in music?  Age 5- started piano. Fourth Grade: Glockenspiel (too loud and heavy). Fifth Grade:snare drum (boring).  Sixth Grade: trombone (too much teasing from the boys). Finally settled into the French horn in Seventh grade.

What non-PSO musical activities do you participate in?  I’m the leader of the FLUKES (Falmouth Library Ukulele Ensemble).  I’m also a national advocate for Ovarian Cancer Awareness and Education.

What’s your favorite PSO memory to date?  After 37 years, there are so many of them it’s hard to pick just one.  But I remember, with great fondness, when Margaret Hamilton (Wicked Witch of the West) narrated “Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus” during a Magic of Christmas performance.

Describe a typical day: Typical?  Musicians don’t have typical days!!

What is the comment/question you get most often when you tell people you play with the PSO?  “WOW…Really? You must have GREAT lips!”

If you couldn’t be a musician, what would be your dream job?  My career is a calling– I can’t imagine not being a musician.  But if I had to pick another career, I’d be a Fortune 500 CEO.  It would be nice to know what’s it’s like to have money.

Any non-musical hobbies? Reading, eating, sleeping, and exercising.  Not necessarily in that order.

What is your favorite music?  That’s like asking a parent which is your favorite child.  I honestly cannot answer this one.

Who or what has been your greatest influence, musical or otherwise?  My mom and dad.  No question about it.

What/where are your favorite eats in Portland?  Becky’s. When not in concert attire, I’m a tee-shirt, blue-jeans kind-of gal.
