Amy Sims, assistant concertmaster

Where did you grow up?  Claremont, CA.

Where do you currently live?  Jamaica Plain, MA. 

What instruments do you play?  Violin and Baroque violin.

Educational background:  University of Southern California Thornton School of Music: Bachelor and Master of Music, Violin Performance with Eudice Shapiro.

Family, Pets, Kids:  Mother, Father retired in Claremont, CA. My older brother is a civil engineer for the county of Santa Cruz, CA.  I have three cats, but no children.

Los Angeles native Amy Sims is a busy free-lance Classical and Baroque violinist living in Boston, collaborating with musicians from the region in a wide range of musical genres from string quartets and intimate Baroque chamber ensembles to large ensembles including Portland Symphony in Maine, where she is the Assistant Concertmaster. She also performs with Boston Baroque, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Boston Modern Orchestra Project (BMOP), Odyssey Opera, and Springfield Symphony Orchestra. In addition to her various affiliations in New England, Amy is a recent recruit of Atlantic Classical Orchestra of the Treasure Coast region of Florida, where she commutes to serve as assistant concertmaster. Each August, Ms. Sims returns to the Peninsula Music Festival Orchestra in Door County, Wisconsin as it’s assistant concertmaster.

Before venturing to New England, Amy was the concertmaster of the Omaha Symphony from 2000-2010. With Bachelor and Master degrees in Violin Performance from the University of Southern California Thornton School of Music with professor Eudice Shapiro, Ms. Sims held the position of principal second violin of the Pacific Symphony Orchestra from 1994 to 2000 while free-lancing on the west coast, performing and recording newly commissioned works with Southwest Chamber Music as well as studio recording for major motion picture soundtracks and television commercials.

Bring your class to a youth concert

This year’s Youth Concert will feature a performance of Carnival of the Animals: Remix, an engaging and reimagined version of Saint-Saëns’ famous work. Featuring local artists including a rapper, a Native American flute player, and an erhu player, this interactive daytime performance is perfect for all elementary students (K-4).
