Let your child’s imagination take wing with this PSO family concert exploring the Magic of Flight! From bumblebees to broomsticks, all you need is “faith, trust, and a little pixie dust.” Come early for an hour of pre-concert games, adventures, and Portland’s largest costume party!

Discovery Concerts bring the whole family together to enjoy the music of the PSO. Concerts are approximately one-hour long and take the audience on a mind-expanding and educational journey with the full orchestra! Doors open at 1 PM for an hour of games, a hands-on Instrument Petting Zoo, and lots more musical fun!

DESIGNED FOR AGES 4-12, BUT ENJOYABLE FOR ALL!

DISCOVERY CONCERT ART CONTEST!
(for Grades Pre-K to 5)

Portland Symphony would like to invite parents to share their kids’ creative talents by entering our art contest! The winning entry will be featured on the cover of our next Discovery Program and will receive four tickets to “The Magic of Flight.”

To submit: Have your child illustrate their favorite things that fly: animals, airplanes, superheroes, magical heroes, fairytale creatures, or something right from their imagination! Then email their masterpiece to info@portlandsymphony.org with 1) Child’s first name 2) Child’s age 3) Parent/Guardian full name and 4) Parent/Guardian contact information.

*Contest rules: All drawings will be judged on the following criteria: originality, interpretation of theme, artistic execution. Please note, artwork will not be returned. By submitting, parents agree that submission(s) can be used both in the Discovery Program and on social media. Entries must be submitted by February 24th, 2020.


  • Parking: Parking is available in several nearby lots. There is limited street parking in the area. Accessible parking for patrons with disability permits is available on both sides of Myrtle Street and on Congress Street in front of City Hall. Parking spaces are in high demand in Portland. Please allow sufficient time before the start of a show to find a parking space. View more details here.
  • Where do I go first?: Begin in the lobby to pick up or purchase your tickets from the Box office. If you have already received your tickets in the mail you can go straight into the auditorium. If you are there before 2:00 PM, be sure to check out our Instrument Petting Zoo and Podium Hero!
  • What about snacks and beverages?: You are allowed to bring snacks and beverages for you and your family to Discovery concert performances. Two concession stands on the first floor of Merrill Auditorium will also be open. 
  • What about pictures and video?: Video and photography are allowed during the Instrument Petting Zoo, at Podium Hero and before the concert begins! Unfortunately, taking video or photos of the PSO musicians during the concert is strictly prohibited.
