← Return to Calendar

2:30pm
Merrill Auditorium

Program

Lili Boulanger D’un matin de printemps

Saint-Saëns Cello Concerto No. 1

Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2

Artists, programs, and dates are subject to change.

Take a musical journey through lyricism, renewal, and sweeping Romantic expression.

Cellist Joshua Roman—last seen with the PSO in 2018—returns as soloist. Roman brings his extraordinary musicianship and vulnerability to Saint-Saëns’s Cello Concerto, intensely lyrical, full of elegance, and moments of sheer beauty and emotional warmth.

The concert opens with Lili Boulanger’s D’un matin de printemps (“Of a Spring Morning”), a brief but beautifully nuanced work that captures the fleeting energy of spring.

Culminating the program is Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2, a landmark in late Romantic music. Written after the crushing failure of his First Symphony and a period of profound self-doubt, the Second Symphony marks a triumphant return of confidence and creative voice. Moving from a broad, expansive and lyrical first movement through to its raucous, energetic finale, it’s music you want to bathe in.
