Grace Shryock, oboe & english horn

Grace Shryock is a highly sought-after oboist and English horn player, currently a member of the Portland Symphony, Boston Lyric Opera, Springfield Symphony, and Albany Symphony. She served as acting English horn of the New York Philharmonic for four years, including as soloist in their performance of Aaron Copland’s Quiet City. Grace has also held Acting Principal English Horn and Assistant Principal Oboe positions with the Richmond Symphony. Additional performance credits include the Boston, St. Louis, Baltimore, New Jersey, and Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestras, Boston Pops, Boston Ballet, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, Rhode Island Philharmonic, and The Knights, as well as many other orchestras along the East Coast.

Her recordings include work with the New York Philharmonic, Boston Modern Orchestra Project, and Albany Symphony Orchestra, where she was principal oboe on the Grammy-nominated Kabir Padavali by Christopher Rouse. Grace has also recorded soundtracks for numerous film and TV scores.

Originally from Grand Rapids, Michigan, she studied at the Manhattan School of Music and Peabody Conservatory. She has taught at Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School of Music, and Virginia Commonwealth University, and led master classes at NYU, Cornell, Brooklyn College, and Mannes. Grace is founder of the Storytime Quintet, dedicated to bringing classical music to children, and serves as Associate Professor of Oboe at Berklee College of Music.

Bring your class to a youth concert

Coming in 2026…The Portland Symphony Orchestra partners with Carnegie Hall to present Link Up: The Orchestra Moves! Link Up is a fully participatory, school-day concert program. Students will fill Merrill Auditorium to sing, play recorders, move, and listen along with the symphony from their seats. This program is designed for students in grades 3-6 but all are welcome and encouraged to participate!
