Alexandre da Costa’s debut performance with the PSO is notable for two reasons—he plays a rare Stradivarius violin from 1701, and he appears not only as soloist, but conductor as well. Renowned as one of the best Stehgeigers (player & conductor) in the world, da Costa pulls double duty on Mozart’s biggest and most masterful violin concerto, written by the composer when he was just 19.
Providing a counterbalance to the lightness of Mozart is Tchaikovsky’s poignant masterpiece, his sixth symphony. Known commonly as the “Pathétique,” it’s tragic, yet enthralling, full of emotional turbulence, and considered by the composer himself to be the best and most open-hearted of his works.
