Julianne Verret, oboe and english horn

Oct 24 2018

Where did you grow up?  South Burlington, VT.

Where do you currently live?  Milford, MA.

What instruments do you play?  Oboe and English Horn.

Educational background:  BS in Music Education from University of Vermont; MM and GD in Oboe Performance from NE Conservatory of Music.

Family, Pets, Kids:  Husband – Robinson Pyle; Cat – Sam.

How did you get started in music?  I began piano lessons in second grade, started flute in fifth grade, and began studying oboe with (PSO principal oboist) Neil Boyer at age 18.

What non-PSO musical activities do you participate in?  Teaching Elementary Music.

What’s your favorite PSO memory to date?  The camel with Judy and Ray during Magic of Christmas.  And, Toshi’s last Magic of Christmas (sad, but lot’s of fun!).

Describe a typical day:  Alarm at 5:15 AM; in the car by 6:15 AM.  Teach elementary music until 2:30 PM, then maybe driving to Portland.

What is the comment/question you get most often when you tell people you play with the PSO?  “That sounds like fun.”  And it is!

If you couldn’t be a musician, what would be your dream job?  A travel writer like Rick Steves or cancer researcher.

Any non-musical hobbies?  Knitting, biking, reading, gardening, and travel!

What is your favorite music? What are you currently listening to?  No particular favorites but I enjoy Peter, Paul & Mary, Elton John and John Williams.

Who or what has been your greatest influence, musical or otherwise?  Neil Boyer. He taught me how to be a musician; not just an oboist.

What/where are your favorite eats in Portland?  Brunch at 555, and Walter’s.
